Steel and cutting work for a rush jobNovember 2010 – In the aftermath of a collision in the North Sea between a container vessel and a tanker, the tanker was severely damaged and had to be repaired immediately. De Boer Staal supplied 20 mm EH36 shipbuilding sheet steel for this rush job. For the repair to the bow of the tanker, De Boer Snijbedrijf cut the steel to size (including the fusion edges) and certified in accordance with 3.2 Lloyds Register. Damen Ship Repair Rotterdam ordered 5800 kg of EH36 shipbuilding plate, thickness 20 mm from De Boer Staal. This steel with fusion edges was cut to size by De Boer Snijbedrijf using their new 3D Koike plasma cutter. For shipbuilding purposes the steel and cutting must be certified and meet the requirements of a recognised classification society, such as Lloyds Register. Because De Boer Snijbedrijf is authorised to recondition materials with 3.1 and 3.2 certification under the terms of EN 10204, it was able to provide the necessary stamp. And, because the surveyor did not have to be called out, the routing could be made more quickly. The finished products were stamped to show what sort of product the steel had been cut from and what its properties and values were. The centre and frame lines and position numbers were also marked. Because De Boer Staal had the right sheet steel in stock, and could cut the steel to size immediately and recondition it, the materials could be delivered extra quickly. The drawings were delivered on Tuesday, and Damen Ship Repair Rotterdam had received the materials for the tanker by Wednesday! |
